Ridge View’s HOSA goes to competition

Ridge View’s HOSA or Health Occupations Students of America attended the South Carolina Leadership Conference on March 7-9 in Charleston.

The conference was held in North Charleston at the Embassy Suites Convention Center. There were 22 Ridge View students attending this conference this year. Students competed in a variety of competitions including physical therapy, and CPR. The top three for each individual competition will proceed to nationals, which are held in Dallas, Texas. In addition to the competitions, there were leadership seminars and scholarship awards. Three Ridge View students have won $1,000 scholarships in the past.

Makayala Sims won a $500 scholarship this year.

Sophomore Ericka VanAlstine who participated in last year’s conference said that one of her favorite experiences at this conference was their keynote speaker.

There was a lot of personal responsibility involved. It is all and all a very nerve-wracking and exciting experience.” VanAlstine also added.


This year, eight students will be going to nationals Ridge View’s HOSA has won six national medals in the past 10 years. 

This club is open to anyone interested in a healthcare career. They practice for eight weeks prior to the competition, which typically occurs on Mondays and Sundays.
